Cryotechnology trends 2026: These developments are changing the industry

An industry in transition

In recent decades, cryotechnology has developed from a niche discipline into a mainstay of modern life sciences. And the pace of change is accelerating. New forms of therapy such as cell and gene therapies, the increasing automation of laboratory processes, a growing awareness of sustainability and the introduction of artificial intelligence into laboratory work are fundamentally changing the requirements for cryogenic systems.

As a company that has been at the forefront of cryotechnology for decades, Consarctic® is not just observing these developments - we are actively shaping them. In this article, we analyze the most important trends that will shape the cryo industry in 2026 and beyond.

Trend 1: Automation and robotics in the cryobank

The manual removal and storage of samples from and into cryogenic containers at -196°C is not only time-consuming, but also a safety risk for personnel. Automated storage systems - cryo robots that can store and retrieve samples independently - are one of the strongest trends in the industry.

What this means for cryogenics

  • Standardized sample formats: Automated systems require uniform vial formats and standardized racks. The cryo set-up systems from Consarctic® are already designed for this compatibility.
  • Interface capability: Tanks and monitoring systems must be able to be digitally connected to higher-level LIMS and automation systems.
  • Reduction of human error: A robot does not forget a tank, does not mix up a cartridge and does not require cold protection.

Trend 2: Artificial intelligence in sample management

AI and machine learning are finding their way into cryogenic storage. Algorithms are already being used to detect anomalies in temperature data, predict maintenance requirements and optimize the logistics of nitrogen supply.

Predictive maintenance

Instead of reactively responding to alarms, an AI analyzes the trends in the sensor data (temperature curves, evaporation rates, fill level patterns) and warns before a problem even occurs. This increases operational reliability and reduces maintenance costs at the same time.

Optimized nitrogen logistics

AI-based systems learn from historical consumption data and dynamically adjust the refill cycles of the automatic liquid nitrogen supply. Seasonal fluctuations, laboratory operating times and planned maintenance work are incorporated into the forecast.

Trend 3: Sustainability and green nitrogen

Cryogenic technology is not energy-intensive per se - compared to ULT freezers (-80°C), a passive LN2 tank does not consume any electricity. Nevertheless, the industry has potential to improve its eco-balance.

  • More efficient tank designs: Improved vacuum insulation and optimized geometries further reduce nitrogen consumption. The eccentric opening of the Consarctic® tanks is an example of such an innovative design.
  • Local nitrogen generation: Some large facilities rely on their own air separation plants, which generate nitrogen on site and thus eliminate transportation emissions.
  • Recycling cooling energy: Research institutes are experimenting with using the cooling energy that is released when nitrogen evaporates for other cooling processes in buildings.

Trend 4: The boom in cell and gene therapies

The approval of more and more new CAR-T products, mRNA-based therapies and gene therapy approaches is driving the demand for high-quality cryopreservation exponentially. Every single therapy requires a flawless cold chain from the manufacturing laboratory to the patient's bedside.

For Consarctic®, this means increasing demand for GMP-compliant controlled rate freezers, validated dry shippers for international transportation and automated monitoring solutions.

Trend 5: ISO 20387 and the professionalization of biobanking

The international standard ISO 20387 defines uniform requirements for the management and quality assurance of biobanks for the first time. Its increasing prevalence is driving the professionalization of the industry and increasing the need for validated, certified cryotechnology.

Shaping the future

Cryotechnology is facing an exciting decade. Automation, AI, sustainability and new forms of therapy will change the industry more than any previous development. Consarctic® is continuously investing in the further development of its products and services to not only keep pace with this change, but to actively shape it.
