An automatic liquid nitrogen supply system connects the central storage outside the building to the individual cryo-containers in the laboratory. The nitrogen is transported via vacuum-insulated lines and provided automatically based on the demand of the connected consumers.
The entire system essentially consists of four coordinated areas.

A large-volume outdoor tank serves as the central supply source. It is filled by the gas supplier and provides the necessary liquid nitrogen for the connected laboratory and cryo areas. The required tank size depends on factors such as consumption, the number of cryo-containers, desired delivery intervals, and potential future expansions.

From the outdoor tank, the liquid nitrogen reaches the individual points of use via a permanently installed piping system. The double-walled and vacuum-insulated lines limit heat ingress during transport. This reduces evaporation losses and allows the liquid nitrogen to be distributed efficiently, even over long distances.

Even with high-performance insulation, a portion of the nitrogen can evaporate during transport. This creates a mixture of gaseous and liquid nitrogen in the line. Phase separators vent the gas portion in a controlled manner, allowing the liquid phase to be delivered more consistently to the connected consumers.

The FMCS – Filling Management Control System coordinates the automatic supply of connected cryo-containers. It manages the designated filling sequences and provides relevant system information via a touchscreen interface.
When a cryo-container requires liquid nitrogen, the filling process is triggered automatically and monitored by the system. The exact scope of functions is tailored to the containers used and the facility's requirements.

The outdoor tank provides larger quantities of liquid nitrogen for multiple cryocontainers or points of use. It is designed based on current consumption and the facility's planned development.
Planning takes into account factors such as the installation area, foundation, gas supplier access, tank volume, and pipe connections.
The pipelines connect the outdoor tank to the cryocontainers and other points of use within the building. Routing, pipe diameters, and connections are planned to suit the pipe length, flow rate, and spatial conditions.
Vacuum insulation limits heat ingress. This reduces evaporation during transport and can minimize condensation or icing on the outer pipe surfaces.


The FMCS serves as the central control level for the liquid nitrogen supply. It coordinates the filling of connected consumers and provides a clear overview of relevant system information.
Automation helps reduce regularly recurring manual filling tasks. This relieves the burden on laboratory staff and supports clearly defined supply workflows.
Phase separators separate the gaseous component from the liquid nitrogen before the medium is routed to the intended consumers.
Positioning and sizing are based on the system layout, piping routes, operating pressure, and the requirements of the connected cryocontainers.
